So easy to use!

I just downloaded Wine for Fedora and it was such a breeze to get my old accounting software running on my Linux machine! I didn't think it would be this straightforward. The Wine Application Database helped me confirm compatibility beforehand, which was super helpful. I'm telling all my friends who use Linux about this!

Consistently reliable

I've been using Wine for years now, starting with an older version on Debian and recently updated to the latest Wine stable release for macOS. Every time I need to run a specific Windows-only application, Wine just works. The documentation is always comprehensive, and the community support on the Bugzilla is very active if you ever hit a snag. This latest update was just as smooth as previous ones, and I appreciate the continued dedication to making Windows apps accessible on other OSes. It's why I keep coming back.

Good, but some setup quirks

I downloaded Wine stable for Ubuntu to try out an old Windows game. The download was quick and the installation instructions on the wiki were clear enough. The game ran pretty well, though I did have to fiddle with the Wine configuration tool for a bit to get the audio working right. It's free software, so can't complain too much, but a more intuitive first-time setup for multimedia would be a nice improvement.

Thinking of trying Wine for some Windows games on my Mac. Anyone have experience with this? Does it actually work well for gaming on macOS?

E Elena 3 weeks ago
It can work, but sometimes it's a bit of a pain to set up. I've had better luck with CrossOver on Mac for games, honestly, since it's based on Wine but has more polish. YMMV though.

I got a few old-school games running fine on my MacBook Pro, but anything recent was a no-go. Don't expect miracles, especially with demanding titles.

Hey guys, is there any real difference between Wine Staging and Wine Stable for everyday use? Like, if I just want to run a few older Windows apps on my Linux box.

T Troy Ito 1 month ago
Stable is, well, stable. Less new stuff but generally more solid. Staging has newer features and fixes, but might have more bugs sometimes. Depends on how adventurous you're feeling.

For just a few older apps, Stable is probably fine. I use Staging for newer games, but for basic stuff, stick to stable if you want less hassle.

Thinking about using this instead of VirtualBox for some lighter Windows apps. How does Wine compare to something like VirtualBox for everyday use?

K Kevin Walsh 1 month ago
Wine is way lighter. VirtualBox is a full virtual machine, so you're running an entire Windows OS. Wine just translates the Windows calls on the fly. Much less resource intensive if your app works with it.

M Mark 1 month ago
Completely different. VirtualBox runs a whole operating system, Wine tries to trick Windows apps into thinking they're on Windows without actually running Windows. If your app works in Wine, it'll be faster than VirtualBox for sure.

Does Wine require me to have a Windows license installed on my machine? Or can I just install Wine on Linux and start using it with Windows apps?

W Wendy Vargas 1 month ago
Nope, no Windows license needed. That's the whole point, it's a compatibility layer, not a virtual machine. You just install Wine and you're good to go.

R Rachel Torres 1 month ago
Nah, you're all good. It doesn't use any Windows code, so no license required. Just download and run.

I'm trying to figure out if my obscure Windows program will even run. Is there like, a list or something where I can check if it's compatible before I go through the install process?

J James Romero 1 month ago
Yep, check out the AppDB on their site. You can search for specific programs and see what other users reported about compatibility and how well it runs.

Definitely the AppDB. It's not perfect but it's the best resource for seeing if something's been tested and what kind of rating it got.
